sit at a table/desk
就坐、入席、坐在桌子旁
这个动作是对着桌子坐下
例：
Jean sat at the table writing a letter.
Jean坐在桌子旁写信。
sit at还可以表示
处在在某个特别的位置、地位、角色
例：
Right now the popular singer is sitting at the top of the billboards with his new hit single.
现在，这位流行歌手带着他的新单曲冲上了音乐公告牌的顶端。

如果是坐在椅子上
sit on是指坐在平的、没有扶手的的椅子
比如sit on a bench/dining chair
坐在长椅/餐椅上
但如果是沙发、软椅，这种有把手、坐下来可以陷进去的
就要用sit in，sit in a couch
sit on除了坐的意思之外
还可以表示：为...的成员
一般指委员会、议会等官方组织的成员
旁听、参加，拖延、压制（行动或决定）

sit for有两个意思
（英）参加...考试；做模特，让...画
sit for表示做模特，是指坐在某个地方让某个人拍照或画画
例：
They were preparing children to sit for the entry examination.
他们准备让孩子参加入学考试。
She sat for Holman Hunt and Millais.
她给Holman Hunt和Millais做模特。
