It’s been a long wait, but Martin Scorsese has finally made another virtuosic gangster saga with Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci, the stars of GoodfellasandCasino. If that weren’t exciting enough, he’s invited along Al Pacino and Harvey Keitel, too.The Irishmanis the true story of a mafia hitman (De Niro) who does the bidding of a quietly terrifying Philadelphia godfather (Joe Pesci) and a loud-mouthed union boss (Al Pacino). Opinions are divided on the digital de-ageing, but Linda Marric at HeyUGuys hails Scorsese’s three-and-half-hour masterpiece as “a beautifully precise, intricate and genuinely engaging story”.

It may not sound like the stuff of a big-hearted comedy, but Taika Waititi can make anything warm and funny, from vampires (What We Do in the Shadows) to intergalactic superheroes (Thor: Ragnarok) to delinquent New Zealanders (Hunt for the Wilderpeople). As well as writing and directing Jojo Rabbit – the winner of the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival – Waititi co-stars as the boy’s imaginary friend, a nitwitted Adolf Hitler.

Do we need another film of Louisa May Alcott’s 19th-Century coming-of-age novel? There have already been seven – including Gillian Armstrong’s 1994 adaptation – and the most recent of those, a modern-day retelling, came out just last year. Still, the new Little Women, written and directed by Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) could be big. Chris Hunneysett at theDaily Mirrorenthuses that “this joyous, moving and funny adaptation of the much-loved literary classic bursts with wit, warmth, beauty and intelligence”. The four March sisters are played by Saoirse Ronan (as Jo), Emma Watson (as Meg), Eliza Scanlen (as Beth), and Florence Pugh (as Amy), and the supporting cast numbers Meryl Streep, Laura Dern and Timothée Chalamet.
