在英语中形容词总共有三个等级，原级（positive)、比较级（comparative）和最高级（superlative），其中比较级和最高级都是由原级通过一定的规则变化而来的。
一、在大部分的单音节形容词后面分别加 -er 和 -est 来构成比较级和最高级
The company was formed by merging three smaller firms.
公司是由三家小公司合并组成的。
Mercury is the smallest planet in the solar system.
水星是太阳系中最小的行星。
二、以 e 结尾的单音节形容词后面分别加 -r 和 -st 构成比较级和最高级
The bathroom would much nicer if the pipes were boxed in.
如果把这些管子嵌入墙内，浴室就要好看得多了。
Jane is the nicest person in the office.
简是办公室里最好的人。
三、以辅音字母 重读闭音节 辅音字母构成的单音节形容词的比较级和最高级是双写该辅音字母，然后分别加 -er 和 -est
Competition is getting hotter day by day.
竞争日趋白热化。
Spain is the hottest country in Europe.
西班牙是欧洲最热的国家。
四、以-y 结尾，但 -y 前是辅音字母的形容词的比较级和最高级是把 -y 去掉，加上 -ier 和 -iest 构成
