17 May is IDAHOT, the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia. Celebrated every year since 2004, this day’s objective is to raise awareness on violence and discrimination against people with different sexual orientations, different gender identities or expressions and different sexual characteristics. 17 May was chosen to commemorate the decision by the WHO to remove homosexuality from its list of mental illnesses in 1990.

On a national level, Belgium has launched a new Federal Action Plan called “For a LGBTQI friendly Belgium”for the years 2021 to 2024. With a total of 133 different measures, this plan aims at strengthening the rights and the inclusion of lesbian, bisexual, gay, transgender, queer and intersex citizens. Our country is also number 3 in the Rainbow Europe Index 2023 of ILGA-Europe, an index that evaluates legislation and policies related to LGBTQI rights.

These are the core values emphasized in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the European Treaties, and the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.

At a time when we are seeing a clear backlash against the human rights of LGBTIQ persons, with sharp increases in hate speech and discrimination, it is only right that we should strengthen our commitment to defending the rights of LGBTIQ individuals with more solidarity, a louder voice and a stronger position in the whole world.
