在英语学习的过程中有三个词经常使大家很疑惑，那就是either，neither和both。这三个词常用来描述"在两个选项之间进行选择"的情况，一般来讲，所选择的结果会有"两者选其一"、"两者都有"或者"两者都不"三种。本期内容就针对这三个词逐一进行讲解。

• 1.1 Either

Either意思为"两者中的一个"，可以理解为"非A即B，非B即A"。这种情况下either后一般接单数名词。请看一下例句：

You can join either class on the schedule.

你可以参加课表上任意一节课。

【这时，either说明课表上有两节课。】

I am not that hungry, either soup is fine for me.

我不是很饿，随便点一个汤就行。

【这时，either说明有两个汤可以选择。】

• 1.2 Neither

Neither表示"两者都不"的意思，可以理解为"非A非B"。Neither之后接单数名词。这种情况就相当于either的否定陈述。请看例句：

Neither boy wants that old bicycle.

这两个男孩都不想要那辆老旧自行车。

Either boy doesn't want that old bicycle.

任何一个男孩都不想要那辆老旧自行车。

• 1.3 Both

Both表示"两者都有"的意思，可以理解为"既A又B"。Both一般放在复数名词之前，或复数代词的宾格之后。请看以下例句：

I like both (the) phones, but I need to decide which one to buy.

这两个手机我都喜欢，但我只能买一个。

【both phones之间可以使用the, these等来限定phones。】

I have two phones, and I like them both.

我有两个手机，两个我都很喜欢。

• 1.4 Either, Neither和Both三个词也可以单独使用，比如以下情境：

A: Would you like noodles or rice for you lunch?

早餐你是想吃面条还是米饭？

B: Either. / Neither. / Both.

随便一个。/ 都不想吃。/ 两个都要吃。

• 2.1 Either of

Either of表示"两者中的一个"，一般有两种结构：

Either of 限定词（the / these / those / my / …） 复数名词

Either of the students might be admitted by the university.

这两个学生中的一个有可能会被这所大学录取。

Either of 复数代词的宾格（you / us / them）

There are two cups of wine on the table, I will drink either of them.

桌子上有两杯酒，我要和其中任意一杯。

• 2.2 Neither of

Neither of表示"两者都不"，一般有两种结构：

Neither of 限定词（the / these / those / my / …） 复数名词

Neither of my daughters can swim.

我的两个女儿都不会游泳。

Neither of 复数代词的宾格（you / us / them）

Neither of you are qualified for the position.

你们两人都不能胜任这个职位。

• 2.3 Both of

Both of表示"两者都会"，一般有两种结构：

Both (of) 限定词（the / these / those / my / …） 复数名词

【此处的of可以省略】

I talked with both (of) the teachers about how to teach the lessons well.

我和两位老师都讨论了如何才能讲好课。

Both of 复数代词的宾格（you / us / them）

Both of them are working hard enough, they deserve the prize.

他们两个工作非常努力，这个奖项他们实至名归。

• 3.1 Either… or…

Either … or…一般用来表示"在两者中进行选择"，此时会提供明确的两个选项。因此可以表示为这个结构either A or B。

I can drink either beer or wine.

不管是啤酒还是红酒我都可以喝。

Either a piece of paper or a notebook is necessary in the meeting.

无论是一张纸或是一个笔记本，在开会的时候都是有必要的。

【句子中的动词的人称由or后面名词的数量决定，本句中的动词之所以是is，正是因为or后面的名词a notebook是单数。】

【但是得注意一种情况，如果either后面的名词为复数，or后面的名词为单数时，句子的动词人称既可以是单数，也可以是复数。请看例句】

Either the phones or the laptop in this office is / are connected to the internet.

在这个办公室，无论是手机还是笔记本电脑都连接了网络。

• 3.2 Neither… nor…

Neither … nor…一般用来表示"在两者中都不"，此时会提供明确的两个选项。因此可以表示为这个结构neither A nor B。

Neither the boss nor the employees of the company are satisfied with the sales in Q3.

这个公司的老板和员工都对第三季度的销售不满意。

【句子中的动词的人称由nor后面名词的数量决定，本句中的动词之所以是are，正是因为nor后面的名词the employees是复数。】

【但是得注意一种情况，如果neither后面的名词为复数，nor后面的名词为单数时，句子的动词人称既可以是单数，也可以是复数。请看例句】

Neither the phones nor the laptop in this office is / are connected to the internet.

这个办公室里的手机和笔记本电脑都没有连接网络。

• 3.3 Either… or…和Neither… nor…两个结构也可以在多个选项中进行选择。

Either A, B, or C.

I would like either apple, banana, or peach.

我想吃苹果、香蕉或者桃子。

Neither A, B, nor C.

Neither apple, banana, nor peach are the fruits for me.

我不喜欢苹果、香蕉或是桃子这样的水果。

• 3.4 Both… and…

Both… and…一般用来表示"两者都会"，此时会提供明确的两个选项。因此可以表示为这个结构both A and B。

Both Roc and Sara are teachers.

Roc和Sara都是老师。
