英语中做定语用的通常是大量的形容词，而事实上，某些副词也可以作定语用。
the way out 出路
the people outside 外面的人
the note below 下面的注释
the young man here 这里的年轻人
the way ahead 前面的路
on the way home 在回家的路上
on the way back 回来的路上
the village around 四周的村庄
the room above 上面的房间
holidays abroad 在国外度假
China today 今天的中国
the neighbour upstairs 楼上的邻居
从中不难看出，作定语用到是某些地点副词、方位副词、时间副词，另有少量其他副词。另一个规律是，这些作定语用到副词通常都后置，放在名词的后面。今后在使用中，我们慢慢会发现，作定语用的副词通常有：here、there、above、below、abroad、upstairs、back、ahead、around、home、up、down、downstairs、out、now、before、today、tomorrow、yesterday等待。
