Lyman Frank Baum is born in Chittenango, a small town in the state of New York in 1856. His father is a businessman and the family is rich. Frank has eight brothers and sisters and his childhood is very happy. 莱曼•弗兰克•鲍姆于1856年出生于纽约州的一个小镇奇特南戈。他的父亲是一名商人，家境富裕。弗兰克有八个兄弟姐妹，他的童年非常幸福。
He is a shy quiet boy and his health isn't very good. He doesn't go to school and he studies at home with a teacher.He loves reading. His favourite stories are traditional European fairy tales but he doesn't like the violence and the frightening creatures in them. Baum has many jobs before he becomes a successful writer. He is a journalist, a chicken farmer, a salesman and an actor. He manages his own theatre and writes plays for it.He even has a shop. In 1897 he writes a book of nursery rhymes in story form Mother Goose in Prose.The book sells well and Baum decides to stop working and concentrate on writing. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is the story of a little girl called Dorothy. It describes her adventures when she and her dog are carried away during a cyclone to the magical land of Oz.There she meets a kind witch who tells her to go to the Emerald City and ask the Wizard to help her go back home.Dorothy follows the yellow brick road to the Emerald City and on her way she makes three friends: the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman and the Cowardly Lion. When they get to the Emerald City, the Wizard tells them that first they must kill the Wicked Witch of the West. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a modern fairy tale. Baum mixes reality (scarecrows and cornfields) with the fantasy and magic of traditional European fairy tales (wizards and witches). Dorothy lives on the dry, grey prairies of Kansas. Her life is boring and her dog Toto is her only friend.Oz is full of colour there. There are castles, talking animals witches and dark forests. She makes new friends and has many exciting adventures.
