when引导状语从句
when可以引导名词性从句、定语从句和状语从句。当它引导状语从句的时候，主要有以下几种用法：
1. 引导时间状语从句，表示“当……时”，“在……时”=while，比如：She was eighteen when her father died.
2. 引导时间状语从句，表示“在……之后”=after，比如：When the meal was finished, he washed up. 吃完饭后，他洗了碗。
3. 引导时间状语从句，表示“一……就……”=as soon as，比如：I will phone you when I get home.
要注意的是在时间状语从句中，如果主句是一般将来时，从句用一般现在时表示将来的含义。

while引导状语从句
while不能引导名词性从句和定语从句，只可以引导状语从句，常见的用法如下：
1. 引导时间状语从句，表示“在……时”=when，比如：They arrived while we were having dinner.
2. 引导时间状语从句，表示“与……同时”，比如：You can go swimming while I'm having lunch. 我吃午饭时你可以去游泳。
3. 引导让步状语从句，表示“虽然”=although，比如：While I am willing to help, I do not have much time available. 尽管我愿意帮忙，但是没有多少时间。
while和when都可以引导时间状语从句，在表达“在……时”是可以互换的。

as引导状语从句
as引导状语从句的常见用法如下：
1. 引导时间状语从句，表示“在……时”=when/while，比如：I saw him as I was getting off the bus. 我下公共汽车时看见了他。
2. 引导时间状语从句，表示“随着”，比如：As time passed, things seemed to get worse. 随着时间的推移，情况似乎变得更糟了。
3. 引导原因状语从句，表示“因为，由于”，和because不同，as引导的从句不是句子的重点，句子的重点是主句，比如：As it was getting late, I turned around to start for home. 天色已晚，我转身回家。
4. 引导让步状语从句，表示“虽然”，这个时候用倒装语序（后边会讲），though也可以用这种结构，比如：Try as he might, he couldn’t open the door. 虽然他试过几次，但仍不能把门打开。
5. 引导方式状语从句，表示“照……的方式”=in the way in which，比如：Leave the papers as they are. 别去动那些文件。
