写作的最终目的是言之有物、言之有意，无论是留学文书与雅思托福写作，或是商务信函乃至诗歌小说创作，这个目的始终如一。斯特伦克教授在这本小册子里一遍又一遍提醒读者们去寻找写作的智慧，去重温莎士比亚在《哈姆雷特》中的那句箴言：“简洁是智慧的灵魂，而冗长是肤浅的藻饰（Therefore, since brevity is the soul of wit/ and tediousness the limbs and outward flourishes.）”
