Chinese martial arts movies abound with scenes in which the hero puts a long, silver needle into a dish in front of him to test whether the dish was poisonous. Now, can we follow suit to ensure that what we eat is safe and healthy? Obviously no; poisonous substances contained in foods today are too diverse and complex to be ascertained through simple ways, let alone by the fictional one mentioned above.

It is estimated that over one thousand toxic substances, some of which can be fatal, have been added into food ingredients and flavorings. In the beginning, most individuals, especially when dining out in restaurants, did not know that what they have been eating has been "poisoned". As more and more reports are released that foods served today are harmful to our health, almost everyone is aware that foods today are not as safe and healthy as foods were in the past.

Unfortunately, Chinese citizens often eat out. Young people especially, prefer to dine in restaurants located in business districts where they can also go shopping, watch films or exercise at the gym. The trend is understandable; many young people in China today have been spoiled to some extent so that most of them are not able to or are unwilling to prepare food at home. Since they can eat and have fun with friends in restaurants, they simply ignore the hazards such as an increased risk of obesity along with diabetes and cancer.

据估计,在食品成分和调味料中,已经添加了1000多种有毒物质(其中有一些是致命的)。起初,大部分人,尤其是在餐厅就餐的人,不知道他们所吃的食物已被“下了毒”。如今,随着食物对人们健康有害的报道越来越多,几乎所有人都明白,现在的食物不如从前那样安全、健康了。

不幸的是,中国人常常外出就餐。尤其是年轻人喜欢在商业区中的餐厅吃饭,因为他们可以在商业区购物、看电影或健身。这种趋势是可以理解的;中国现在有很多年轻人是被宠大的,所以他们不会也不愿意在家里做饭。他们在餐厅既能吃饭,又能和朋友玩要,所以他们对在餐厅就餐的危害(比如罹患肥胖症及伴随而来的糖尿病、癌症风险增加)就会视而不见。
