01What is “Double Ninth Festival”?
The Double Ninth Festival, also known as the Chongyang Festival, is a traditional Chinese festival that falls on the ninth day of the ninth month in the Chinese lunar calendar. It is a time for family reunions and paying respect to the elderly. It is customary to visit elderly relatives and friends, offering them gifts and showing them respect. People also climb mountains or go on picnics to enjoy the beautiful autumn scenery.
02What is the origin of “Double Ninth Festival”?
The name "Chongyang" (重阳) originated from the ancient Chinese classic "Book of Changes" (易经), in which the number "nine" is considered yang and the number "six" is considered yin. In the "Book of Changes", "nine" is also regarded as the "extreme number". The ninth day of the ninth month in lunar calender coincides with the number "nine" in both the day and the month, hence the name "Chongjiu" (两九相重), which means "two nines overlapping". At the same time, it is also called "Chongyang" (重阳) because it involves two yang numbers combined together. Having two "nines" together symbolizes the unity of all things and the beginning of a new cycle. Therefore, ancient Chinese believed that Chongyang was an auspicious day worth celebrating. In ancient times, there was a custom of holding banquets to pray for longevity on this day.
