昨天文章如下：
She was wearing a full-length skirt which swept the ground. Despite her great age, she was very graceful indeed, but, so far, the archaeologists have been unable to discover her identity.
她身穿一条拖地长裙，尽管上了年纪，但体态确实优美。不过，考古工作者至今未能确定这位女神的身份。
（1）过去进行时的用法
She was wearing a full-length skirt …在这个句子中，使用的就是过去进行时的用法。
首先我们来看一下进行时。
①现在进行时结构
主语 am/is/are 现在分词
比如：
She is singing.她正在唱歌。
They are reading English.他们正在读英语。
这里需要注意的是be going to的用法。表面看虽然也是be动词 现在分词，但其实表示的是意思是将来时。比如：
It is going to rain. 要下雨了。
②过去进行时的用法
知道现在进行时之后，改写为过去进行时的方法就是将am/is/are换成过去式的was/were即可。
主语 was/were 现在分词
比如：
Cinderella was wearing a beautiful dress and a pair of fine crystal shoes. 灰姑娘穿着一件漂亮的裙子和一双精致的水晶鞋。
在这样的描写方法中，大家可以试着对比一下过去时的手法。
Cinderella wore a beautiful dress and a pair of fine crystal shoes at that time. 当时灰姑娘穿着一件漂亮的裙子和一双精致的水晶鞋。
可以看出，当使用过去进行时的时候，要比过去时更有画面感。所以这也是在文学作品中经常使用的写作手法。这下同学们会仿写了吗？
（2）unable，enable，disable的区别
the archaeologists have been unable to discover her identity.这里是说考古工作家们未能确定这位女神的身份，
之前在词根词缀中有介绍过前缀un，in，im，dis都有否定的含意。所以今天的unable和disable在词义上是相近的，均表示“不能”。但其在词性上略有不同。
Unable是形容词，表示“不能的”“不会的”
Disable是动词，表示“使失去能力”“使无资格”
而enable则刚好与disable构成一对反义词，动词，表示“使能够”
因为词性的不同，所以unable与disable不同互换。
The fishermen were my old friends, but they were unable to recognize me. 那些渔夫是我的老朋友，但他们却不能认出我了。
They were disabled by age or sickness. 他们因年老或疾病而失去了工作的能力。

（3）discover与invent的区别
①从词义上区分：discover表示“发现”，invent表示“发明”。发现是指已经存在的东西，重新找到它。发明是指没有的东西，发明出来。
②从词根与词缀上来区分。Discover由前缀dis-和词根cover组成。Cover表示覆盖，dis前面刚介绍过disable，放在这个单词里，表示“不让cover”，本来东西被盖着藏起来，现在揭露出来了，就是“发现”。
