“Wait” and “await” have essentially the same meaning, “等候、等待”.
“Wait” and “await” 意思基本相同,意为“等候、等待”。
wait:
◆ less formal
相对来说,没那么正式
◆ an intransitive verb, it can be used with or without an object.
不及物动词,可带宾语或单独使用
◆ When it’s followed by an object, usually with the preposition for and the object can be things or people.
后面接宾语时,通常加介词for, 宾语可接事物或人
e.g. I’ve been waiting since this morning.
从今天早上开始,我就一直在等你。

await:
◆ more formal
更正式一些
◆ a transitive verb and must be followed by an object.
及物动词,必须接宾语
◆ The object can only be things.
宾语只能为物
e.g. I’m awaiting your reply.
我在等你的答复。
They are awaiting the birth of their first baby.
他们在等待第一个孩子的出生。
They are awaiting the arrival of the Queen.
他们在等待女王的到来。
I’m awaiting you. 这种表述是错误的。
How are “wait” and “await” different?
“wait” and “await”,到底有什么不同呢?
我们再来看两个例子:
◆ The Principal was waiting for Candy to arrive, but Candy was awaiting the call.
校长在等待Candy的到来,但Candy却在等电话。
◆ The Director said, “Clients have to wait, as the new project is awaiting the approval of the Central Government.”

重点:
●wait 在日常口语中运用比较多,不及物动词,可接宾语
也可单独使用,接宾语时需加介词for,宾语可为人或者事物,也可加to do something。
● await 多用于书面、正式的场合,及物动词,必须加宾语,且宾语只能为物。
