time-out
A short period of time when a child must sit quietly as punishment for behaving badly.
在国外，很多父母会用time-out来惩罚不乖的孩子。通常，他们会让孩子坐到家里一把面对墙壁的椅子上，期间禁止他说话、看电视、玩游戏、吃东西，有点类似于中文里的“关禁闭”“罚站墙角”“面壁”或“关小黑屋”。
在学校，就是教室里一个相对安静隔离状态的角落， 大都有一把椅子，学生在课堂上受到警告后，老师可让其坐在这个角落里思过反省。
Time-out还有其他一些花哨名字：Thinking-Chair（思过椅），Opportunity-Corner（机会角落，因为这是老师给你思过的机会，以挽救你受更严重处罚），Cool-off place（安静区）等等，在英国则常用naughty chair（淘气椅）或naughty step（淘气角）来表达。总之，time-out的目的是让干扰课堂纪律的学生与其他学生隔离开，离开学习场所，独自在安静的地方思过反省。
