事实上，到了今天，科拉超深钻孔的深度纪录已经被一些“后起之秀”给打破了。2008年，卡塔尔的阿肖辛油井达到了12289米；2011年，俄罗斯在库页岛的Odoptu OP-11油井达到了12345米；2012年，埃克森美孚石油公司的Z-44 Chayvo油井达到了12376米。但是，这些油井只是胜在总长度更长，它们还存在一定的水平位移，以实际的垂向深度计算，科拉超深钻孔SG-3依然是到达地球最深处的人造物，也是世界上最深的纯粹以科研为目的钻探井。
