It is a well-known fact that in today’s richer developed societies many citizens tend to waste much of the food they purchase in eateries and supermarkets. This essay shall explore the reasons for this phenomenon, along with discussing possible solutions for overcoming this issue.
One of the main reasons for the wastage of food, whether bought in dining establishments or in supermarkets, is the pattern of over-consumption witnessed in today’s societies. This trend of over-consumption is an aberration of economic ability, where one feels empowered due to their economic status, and as such, disposable consumables, including food, lose their utilitarian essence and instead tend to be taken for granted. With increased economic capacity, the culinary market also lends itself as a facilitator to over-indulgence, as the accessibility to food knows no bounds, and subsequently, food satisfying even the pickiest of preferences is made accessible to all citizens, and yet, too much of anything inevitably results in waste, as can be evidenced by the crammed refrigerators of many households.
In order to overcome this challenge, educating the young is probably the best, yet least intrusive method that can be utilized in this war against waste. As commonly recognized within psychology, it is evident that children can actually have a major impact on parents’ shopping patterns, and in this case, even on ordering food at a dining establishment. If a concerted effort is made to educate the old dictum of ‘want not, waste not’, this philosophy will gradually, through osmosis, be transmitted to the parents, resulting in parents taking more responsibility for the food waste they create. A more effective deterrent to wasting food, though more invasive, would be to simply tax households and restaurant-goers on the amount of food wastage they produce.
In conclusion, the attitude of over-consumption, due to higher levels of disposable incomes, seems to be the main culprit for wasting food, whether purchased from grocery stores or within restaurants, and that the most effective long-term solution to this issue is to educate the young that the wasting of food is anathema to acceptable patterns of consumption.
