The Normativity of Primary School English Teachers’ Classroom Discourse

Abstract: With primary school English learners, effective teaching language should be grammatical, clear, appropriate and, as far as possible, normative. Based on the first-hand classroom observations, this paper discusses non-normative language problems in primary school teachers’ classroom discourse from four aspects: phonetic errors, ungrammaticality, semantic anomaly and pragmatic failure. The authors thus advocate that primary school English teachers should enhance their awareness of discourse normativity and improve the quality of their classroom discourse.
