法官、教师、医生、警察、侦探……8个素不相识的人受邀来到海岛上。他们抵达后用晚餐时，餐厅里的留声机忽然响起，指控他们宾客以及管家夫妇这十人都曾犯有谋*罪。众人正在惶恐之际，来宾之一忽然死亡，噩梦由此开始了。死亡的顺序和手法，和下面的这首童谣有关：
Ten little Indian boys went out to dine;

无人生还象征着来客的小士兵
这首童谣正是英国现实中的一首知名童谣，利用这首童谣，阿加莎进行了巧妙的情节设定，使它成为童谣*人题材小说的代表作。
除了经典的《无人生还》，阿加莎还有一本《黑麦奇案》（A Pocket Full of Rye），使用的也是童谣*人的手法。
在这本小说中，百万富翁雷克斯·佛特斯库先生被毒死在自己的办公室，他的口袋里奇怪的放有黑麦；之后他年轻的妻子也被发现死在客厅里，死者身边有一块涂了蜂蜜，吃到一半的面包；接下去是可怜的女仆，死后鼻子上还邪门的夹着一根晒衣夹子。而这一切的一切，似乎又都与二十年前的黑画眉金矿有关……
贯穿全文的也是一首童谣：
Sing a song of sixpence,
唱一首六便士之歌，
A pocket full of rye;
袋子里装满黑麦；
Four and twenty blackbirds,
二十四只黑画眉，
Baked in a pie.
被放在派里面烤！
The king was in his counting house
国王待在他的金库里，
Counting out his money,
数着他的财富。
The queen was in the parlor
皇后坐在大厅里，
Eating bread and honey,
吃着面包和蜂蜜。
The maid was in the garden,
Hanging out the clothes,
女仆在花园晒衣，

这次的童谣，不是断案的线索，而是成为了干扰警察探案的扰乱因子。
而这两部小说里的童谣，都是英国现实社会流传下来的，而且都能在一本童谣书里查得到——《鹅妈妈童谣》。
《鹅妈妈童谣》是一部英国民间童谣收录集。最早的版本出版于1791年，当时仅仅收录了52篇童谣，长年累月的积累后，如今已有800余篇。
