唯独克劳福德·朗的墓碑上没有提到乙醚麻醉，只是：“我的职业是上帝赋予的职责 [17]。”
历史在发展，文明在前进，对新型麻醉剂的探索和改进从未停止过。2018年9月11日，拉斯克临床医学奖授予苏格兰化学家约翰·格伦（John B Glen）[18]，表彰他在5,000多种化合物中筛出异丙酚（Propofol），异丙酚除麻醉中见效和恢复快外，还具有成本低，无任何副作用的特点，是目前使用的最佳麻醉剂。
只要新生事物不断出现，发明权和专利之争也必然会存在。随着文明的发展，专利保护机制的逐步完善，类似乙醚麻醉发明人的悲剧将难以再现。但只要名利追逐在，科学发展的道路上，就一定会有不择手段，不顾伦理道德的不端行为，可怕的是那些不仅仅是自己落下一个悲惨下场，还给社会和人类造成危害和悲剧的狂人。时刻警惕着！
