About the Spring Festival

The Spring Festival is the most important festival for the Chinese people and is when all family members get together, just like Christmas in the west.
春节是中国人民最重要的节日，所有家庭成员聚在一起，就像西方的圣诞节一样。
Before the New Year’s comes, people completely cleans the indoors and outdoors of their homes as well as their clothes, bedclothes and all their utensils.
春节前，人们会彻底清理打扫自己的家，包括房间、衣服、被褥和其它器具。
All the doors panels will be pasted with Spring Festival couplets. The content varies from house owners’ wishes for a bright future to good luck for the New year. Also, pictures of the god of doors and wealth will be pasted on front doors to ward off evil spirits and welcome peace and abundance.
人们将所有门板上贴上春联，在红纸上写上对联，内容多是憧憬光明的未来，表达人们新年交好运的意愿。门神和财神的照片也会被张贴在前门，用来辟邪和招财纳福。
Dumplings are a symbolic food for the Spring Festival, symbolizing the alternation of the old year and the New Year. But in southern China, tangyuan is more commonly used instead of dumplings.
饺子是春节的标志性食物，寓意着旧年和新年的交替。但中国的南方更多的却是用汤圆来代替饺子。
Setting off firecrackers is the most typical Spring Festival custom, and people believe that the sound of firecrackers can drive away evil spirits.
放爆竹是最典型的春节习俗，人们认为，爆竹的声音能够驱赶邪灵。
During the Spring Festival, relatives and friends will give New Year's greetings to each other. Children get lucky money from their married elders. Lucky money means the blessings of the elders to the younger generation.
春节期间，亲朋之间会互相拜年。孩子们会从已经结婚的长辈那里拿到压岁钱。压岁钱寓意着长辈对晚辈的祝福。
