both 可以用作代词、形容词、副词以及连词，在句子充当多种句子成分，在句子中的位置也不同。
1. both 表示"二者都"，和neither (二者都不)相对，和all (三者及以上都)表示的范围不同。
The twins are both basketball players.
这对双胞胎都是篮球运动员。
Neither of the twins likes playing basketball.
这对双胞胎都不喜欢打篮球。
All of my classmates passed the examination.
我的同班同学们都通过了考试。
2. both 和动词连用，放在系动词、助动词及情态动词后，行为动词前。
You are both wrong.
你们两个都错了。
His parents have both visited Beijing。
他的父母都去过北京。
They both went fishing yesterday.
昨天他们两个都去钓鱼了。
3. both 和名词或代词连用，有以下几个结构。
(1) both of the / 指示代词 / 形容词性物主代词/ 名词所有格 复数名词, of 可省略。
Both (of ) the twins are volunteers.
这对双胞胎都是志愿者。
Both (of ) his brothers joined the army last year.
他的两个哥哥去年都参军了。
Both (of )my hands are dirty.
我的双手都弄脏了。
(2) both of 人称代词宾格, of 不能省略。
I know both of them.
他们两个我都认识。
You can take both of them away.
你可以把他们两个都带走。
(3) both 复数名词
There are many trees on both sides of the street.
街道两旁有很多树。
4. both 用作代词，可单独使用充当某种句子成分，后面不接名词。
They gave two answers. Both are right.
他们给出两个答案。两个都是对的。
There are two skirts left. I'll take both.
还剩下两条裙子，我都买了。
5. both…and… 表示"……和……二者都"，连接多种句子成分，如果做主语谓语动词用复数。
I can speak both Chinese and English.
我会说汉语和英语。
Both Tom and Peter have ever lived in Paris.
汤姆和彼得都曾经住在巴黎。
