一、not only ... but also 是并列连词,用来连接和强调两个同等的成分,用来表示令人惊讶或是意料之外的事,而且后者的更为令人惊讶,它可以用来列出形容词的性质、名词或动词,以显示互补的性质、数量或动作、事件和状态。,意为“不但...,而且...”,例如:
1、主语 动词 not only 形容词 but also 形容词,例如:
He is not only arrogant but also selfish.
他不仅傲慢,而且自私。
Tom is not only rich but also famous.
汤姆不仅富有而且出名。
She was not only extremely intelligent but also very practical.
她不仅非常聪明,而且非常实际。
2、主语 动词 not only 副词 but also 副词,例如:
John works not only quickly but also efficiently.
约翰不仅工作很快,而且工作很出色。
Thomas writes not only correctly but also neatly.
托马斯写得不仅正确而且工整。
He worked not only hard but also carefully.
他不仅努力工作,而且细心工作。
3、主语 动词 not only 名词 but also 名词,例如:

二、为了强调,可将 not only 置于句首,此时其后的句子通常要用部分倒装的形式,但是 but also 后面的句子不用倒装,例如:
1、当句中有情态动词或是 be 动词时,把情态动词或 be 动词提到 not only 后面,例如:

三、not only … but also … 中一般可以省略 also ,如:

但在连接句子时,有时可见到省略 but 或是 but also 的情形,如:

省略 but also,句子之间常用分号隔开,例如:

四、not only ... but also ... 中 but 与 also 分离的现象,例如:
