英语词dare的意思是“敢”，既可作情态动词，又可作实义动词，情态动词所表达的感情色彩更强，实义动词更强调客观，它们的主要用法不同：情态动词时直接加动词原型，否定是直接加not（和can用法一样）。实意动词加to do，否定和其他动词一样用does（do）not dare。
（1）dare 作情态动词
这时，它主要用于否定句、疑问句或条件句中。
They dare not tell me the truth. 他们不敢向我说实话。
Dare you say that to the boss? 你敢这样跟老板说话吗？
How dare you ask me such a question? 你怎么敢问我这样的问题？
If you dare speak to me like that again, you will be sorry. 你胆敢再这样对我说话，你会后悔的。
I dare say you are right. 我想你是对的。（I dare say是习惯用法，表示可能性、主观推测，不翻译为“我敢说”）
He dared not go near the place. 他不敢靠近这个地方。（dared是dare的过去式，但dare没有单数第三人称的变化形式）
I daren't have done it yesterday, but I think I dare now. 我昨天不敢做这件事，但我想现在敢做了。
（2）dare作实义动词
作实义动词时，dare有各种词形的变化，后面多接带to的不定式（to可省略）。
He didn't dare (to) go home. 他不敢回家。
We must dare to think, speak and act. 我们必须敢想、敢说、敢做。
The boy stood before the teacher, not daring to look up. 那位男同学站在老师面前，不敢抬头。
